DIRECTV Equipment Installation Guide, SWM, DECA, & MRV

This lets you preset the satellite to its correct elevation. Have the receiver installed in a location with an unblocked view of the southern sky. Most satellite receivers are hud app prices installed on a roof or balcony. If possible, trees and buildings should not block the receiver. This article is about installing cables for a non “SWM” Direct TV system.

For the most consistent line-to-power-inserter results, run a line from the DC/PWR port into the POWER TO SWM port on the power inserter. You will not be able to run a receiver from this connection. It also becomes impossible to use the power inserter’s “TO IRD” port to connect a receiver inline with the power inserter. If you have two SWM8s, you can replace them with two SWM-16s. Use a pencil to note the mounting angles on the dish. This will help you see if you have inadvertently moved the dish.

We strongly recommend only DIRECTV-branded power supplies. Assuming you have one, your power supply will have two coaxial cable connections—one labeled SWM, the other labeled IRD. Connect a cable from the red SWM connector on the power supply to the red connector on the SWM . Be very wary of anyone trying to sell you a PI-21 with a SWM8 multiswitch. The PI21 is used with the SWM ODU , and is not powerful or reliable enough to be used with the SWM8 multiswitch. We include a link to weaKnees below if you want one source for the SWM and correct PI.

Then attached the coaxial cables from the SWM splitter to the new splitter. DIRECTV has put out wiring diagrams suggesting that the SWM must be within 40’ of the dish, although actual field testing suggests that longer distances are fine. Keep in mind, however, that the farther the SWM is from the dish, the more the signal loss.

If your dish looks like one of the above, with a round reflector or two heads up front, you will need to replace it to upgrade to SWiM. Installing your power inserter this way will make for a more stable system and will help ensure you don’t accidentally “smoke” a receiver. DIRECTV specs suggest connecting the power inserter one of three ways. DIRECTV’s Whole-Home Viewing service is designed to work around a single SWM8 or SWiM-16 multiswitch.

How to Upgrade an Existing DIRECTV Slimline Dish with a New LNB

This helps pay for your antenna and any other equipment you had to purchase. If it says “Antenna” press the left arrow button on the remote to change it to “Cable”. The dish needs to be mounted to a non-moving object. Check for a signal using the “Dish Pointing” menu’s signal meter displayed on your TV screen. Adjust the dish’s pointing to achieve your maximum signal strength. Make sure a landline phone is off its hook to avoid getting an electric shock from any incoming calls.

Do I need an hdtv antenna if I can receive local channels using internet, Roku & subscription service like YouTube TV? I ask because I’m doing a trial of YouTube TV on my iPad, & all local channels are available. A DirecTV dish cannot be used as an antenna because it is designed to receive signals from satellites in orbit, while antennas are designed to receive signals from terrestrial broadcast towers. While a DirecTV dish may be able to pick up some local over-the-air channels if it is properly aligned and in close proximity to the broadcast towers, it will not be as effective as a dedicated OTA antenna. Ran the coaxial cable from the antenna to a new splitter.

Before SWM, every receiver needed a separate line all the way to the dish or multiswitch… This made it hard for installers working with homes pre-wired for cable TV, increasing costs and install times. Homeowners who had cables running through the walls didn´t like the idea that they needed more wires, often outside the walls, to get basic service. OnSWM-enabled dishes, a single line is run to asplitter. A cable is run from the red connection on the splitter into the “Power to SWM” connection on the power inserter. Then, a cable is run from the “Signal to IRD” connection to your receiver.

No reason to return a universal remote since one of your TVs may need a new controller one day. You want to turn your old DirecTV dish into an antenna for over-the-air TV. The only reusable parts of the DirecTV dish would be the mounting arm of the dish. Depending on your new TV antenna, you may be able to re-use the existing DirecTV mount.

The SWM-16 can take the place of the SWM8 with only minor changes to the system. All SWM-8 switches should use the PI-29Z power inserter, but some SWM systems have the PI-21 power inserter. While this does not pose an issue for SWM systems already in place, you need the PI-29Z.

Depending on random factors, which might be impossible to avoid, you might not see more than eight DVRs in your setup. If possible, try to build your Whole-Home Viewing system so that one Genie and seven HR24s are sufficient. This yields the ability to record 19 channels simultaneously. If you need more than that, you can add additional DVRs, but some receivers might not be able to see them. The LA144 is only going to work with the signal it has, and that signal might benefit from further processing.
